MINUTES:  May 12, 2008 
 
1. The meeting was called to order by the Chairperson Mr. Vasquenza at 7:00pm in        
     the East Hampton High School Library/Media Center. 
 
Members present:  Mr. Vasquenza, Ms. Robinson, Mr. Hurst, Mr. Coolican, Ms. Barmasse, Mr. Gemma, Ms. Wall and Mr. Laraia

5.  Consent Agenda  
     5.1  Motion by Mr. Laraia, seconded by Mr. Coolican,  to approve the minutes of 
            the April 28, 2008 Board meeting.     Voted Unanimously.    
 
6.  Student/Staff Recognition 
     6.1  Mr. Vasquenza noted that it was a great pleasure to bring to the Board                                 
            the Euro Challenge Team from East Hampton High School.  The students who  
            participated were Walid Ahmad, Joshua Gustine, Eric Guy Harper, Melissa  
            Jordan and Katie Monighetti. These tenth graders demonstrated enormous  
            drive and perseverance in their pursuit of success in this competition.  With the  
            enormous support from their teacher Mrs. Mastromonaco, these students  
            emerged as the 4th place winner, beating the top teams from 12 other high  
            schools.   
     
6.2     The Euro Challenge Team presented to the Board of Education the presentation 
          that they presented at the competition on April 29, 2008 
 
6.3     Mr. Vasquenza and Dr. Golden presented certificates to all of the team members.  
 
6.4     Mr. Vasquenza and Dr. Golden presented Mrs. Mastromonaco with a corsage in  
          appreciation of the enormous amount of time and dedication she gave to these  
          students and for the opportunity she provided for them to engage in this real life 
          experience.   
                                    
7.  Committee Reports 
     7.1  Student Council – Johnathan Tuttle was not present, Mr. Vasquenza read his 
            report and it is listed below.   
 
·       The Boy’s Tennis Team is currently 7-6 and will be playing at Westbrook today,  
            May 12, at 3:30 p.m. 
 
·       The Girl’s Tennis Team is standing at 3-9. They hope to get another win today                   
      against Westbrook, at home, at 3:30 p.m. as well. 
 
·       The Boy’s Baseball Team is currently 10-5. Today is Senior Day for the baseball    
       team. This event honors baseball team members who are graduating seniors  
      and also thanks for parents for excellent guidance and support. 
 
·       The Softball Team is currently 8-7 and has an away game against Portland at 3:45 p.m. 
 
·       The EHHS Band will be taking a trip to Cleveland, Ohio for a Music Festival.  
     The band members will receive ratings and rankings, work in clinics together    
         and will also be judged by officials. Also lined up for the band members is a trip  
     to a local History Museum, a visit to a science center and also to take a tour of   
     the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. 
 
·        Coming up on the 24th of May is the annual Grand March and Prom. This event  
      is the most anticipated event for Junior and Senior students. The dinner will be   
      held in Windsor at Maneeley’s. 
 
      7.2  Personnel – Mr. Hurst noted that they met this evening and began a discussion 
             of the Superintendents Goals.  They will review these goals and will be meeting             
             with the Board.  
 
      7.3  Policy – Ms. Robinson noted they will be meeting on May 13, 2008 to go over 
             the FMLA policy. 
 
      7.4  Curriculum – Ms. Barmasse noted that the Committee had met on May 5, 2008. 
              At that meeting Ms. Briere, Mathematics Coordinator for the district presented 
              an update to the committee on the Everyday Math Program, the Daily Oral             
              Math Program, and assessment summaries.   
 
      7.5 Transportation, Buildings and Grounds – Mr. Gemma noted that the committee 
             had not met.  
 
      7.6  East Hampton Education Association – None 
 
      7.7  Liaison Reports – Mr. Vasquenza noted he was embarrassed by the low turnout  
             of towns people that had voted for the town budget.  Ms. Wall commented on  
             that there was no controversy and maybe that was why.   
  
            Ms. Barmasse noted that she attended a meeting at LEARN on May 8,  
            2008.             
    
      7.8  Financial Reports  - Dr. Golden noted that the General Fund Expenditures  
             Projection Report for Year Ending 06/30/08 presented was the worst case   
             scenarios.  Mr. Coolican said that he found this format confusing and that he  
             would like the report to be included in the Board packet.  Dr. Golden agreed 
             and stated that the report would be in the packet on Fridays in the future.  She 
             also said that future reports would be presented in the format previously used   
             with the Board.   
 
   8.  Communications 
 
        8.1  Dr. Golden reviewed the following communications with the Board:  
            -   2008-2009 Board of Education Meeting Schedule  
            -   East Hampton Middle School, Middle Ground, Center School Chronicle, 
                May, 2008 
            -   Center Elementary School, Issue No. 30, April 25, 2008 and issue No. 31,  
                May 2, 2008 
 
        8.2  Dr. Golden shared with the Board that Rosemarie Smith’s father had passed  
               away and Ms. Smith would be out of the office until May 19, 2008.  She also 
               noted that the Board of Education along with the Central Office staff had sent 
               flowers to her.   
 
        8.3  Dr. Golden noted that the East Hampton School District had received the  
               Live United Way Award for achieving 50-74% employee participation  
               during the 2007/2008 United Way Campaign.    
 
        8.4  Dr. Golden noted that the Girls High School Basketball Team was honored 
               at the Middlesex Chamber breakfast on May 12, 2008 for their great season 
               and winning the Shoreline Conference.  At the Chamber breakfast they had 
               the opportunity to have a picture taken with Kevin Gilbride, Offensive Lineman 
               coach for the New York Giants.       
 
       8.5   Dr. Golden noted that there would be a Community Conversation  
               held on May 29, 2008 at the East Hampton High School from 6:00pm to  
               8:30pm. The district will host approximately  50 people from the community  
               who are willing to join in a conversation regarding educating the children in the                                                                                             
               community.  Dr. Golden invited the Board to attend and observe.  
 
9.    Program Presentation  
       9.1  Mr. Reas presented on the Special Education Program, Then, Now & Next 
              which reviewed the past, present and future state of East Hampton’s Special   
              Education program.  After his presentation he answered questions from the 
              Board members.     
 
10.  Unfinished Business – None  
 
11.  New Business  
         
        11.1  Mr. Vasquenz noted that a Non-Resident Student Tuition Request was          
                 submitted for Mrs. Stacey Gibson, a teacher at Memorial School, to register         
                 her sons Noah and Sam at Memorial School and that we had done this 
                 in the past.  
 
        11.2 Motion by Ms. Robinson and seconded by Ms. Barmasse  to approve the   
                request for Non-Resident Student Request for Stacy Gibbons to register her  
                sons Noah and Sam at Memorial Elementary School for the 2008-2009  
                school year.                 Voted Unanimously.

15.  Audience of Citizens  -  Mr. Ken Harper noted that he wanted to commend the  
       Special Education Program in East Hampton and commended the Middle School     
       for their outstanding support and work with the special education students.

       16.1  Motion by Ms. Robinson, seconded by Mr. Laraia, to adjourn the meeting
